Friday Review: Calling for backup

It's a week to forget for some players after cloud backup services see mixed headlines; plus a look at the week's news.

Headlines hailing the arrival of operators to the cloud services sector have been consistently cropping up as players across the industry try to make their offerings even stickier; but some high-profile and embarrassing stories this week might cause some players to question whether it is a service worth staking a reputation on. Vodafone this week ramped up its cloud activities after unveiling plans to launch a browser-based service that will enable PC and netbook users to backup their data across both fixed and mobile networks. The operator, in partnership with data storage and recovery firm Decho, has targeted the service – called Vodafone PC Backup – at both consumer and business users, and will launch across its European footprint throughout the remainder of the year. Unfortunately Vodafone couldn't have picked a worse week to announce its latest offering, thanks to the misfortunes of a number of its peers. BT has had a week to forget after ongoing issues with its Digital Vault service drew some unwanted attention…
