Friday Review: All aboard the app train

A year on since Apple's App Store opened and mobile app statistics, launches and initiatives still dominate the headlines.

After Apple opened the virtual doors to its App Store, we fully expected here at Total Telecom that this would just be the tip of iceberg when it came to news and announcements about various mobile applications. One year and 1.5 billion downloads later, we get the feeling that this is still only just the beginning. "The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs, in a statement on Tuesday. iPhone and iPod Touch owners can now choose from 65,000 applications, ranging from software that helps you manage your budget, to a virtual guitar. The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that Apple's 30% commission on paid-for apps likely generates $150 million a year. Although this is tiny compared to the $2.8 billion generated from iPhone sales, it would be interesting to see how many handsets Apple would sell if iPhones didn't come with the App Store…
