Face to Face with Paul Jacobs

Qualcomm's CEO talks about patent disputes, the impact of the downturn, and where he thinks the next opportunities are in the wireless market.

Paul Jacobs has a little more time on his hands these days since his company Qualcomm settled long-running patent and royalty disputes with Nokia and Broadcom, in July 2008 and April 2009 respectively. Qualcomm has even gone one step further with Nokia since settlement was reached: the two companies plan to do what once seemed unimaginable and work together on "some projects", says CEO Jacobs. "We made some announcements about phones for the US market, and I think it's a process of just building up the relationship between the two companies…now I'd say, since the settlement, we've been building the relationships throughout the organisation."
