Friday Review: Coverage at a cost

Vodafone's femto strategy centres on boosting in-home coverage, but will people pay? Plus the rest of the week's news highlights.

Here at Total Telecom we have long been sceptical about the potential of femtocells. Frankly, we find it hard to believe that people will pay for the privilege of better mobile coverage in their home, and new femtocell-related service models promised by proponents of the technology didn't seem truly compelling. However, this week Vodafone became Europe's first mobile operator to launch a femtocell proposition, basing its campaign simply on better in-home network coverage. And a straw poll in the office... OK, I'll rephrase that - the one person in the Total Telecom office that has trouble with in-home coverage said she would pay for a femtocell to enable her to use her mobile at home. Maybe the tide is turning. But analysts are not totally convinced. "[Vodafone's] announcement is a femtocell offer that is an improvement on what has gone before…
