Friday Review: Allergic to Apples

Industry obsessed as iPhone 3.0 looms, but Q1 handset sales figures make grim reading; plus the rest of the week's news.

Love it or loathe it, the global iPhone hype refuses to die down. I'm firmly in the 'just don't get it' camp... perhaps largely because I just don't have one. Admittedly I like my iPod, but I like it a normal amount, not a 'worshiping at the altar of Steve Jobs, couldn't live without it' amount. But the iPhone... <shrug>, I'm sure the UI is great, but as a phone it's kind of bulky. However, evidence suggests that the average Total Telecom reader has more than a passing affection for the aforementioned, need-it-more-than-oxygen device. This week, six times as many of you read the latest speculation piece on what the upcoming new iPhone 3.0 will offer as read Gartner's fascinating figures on global first-quarter handset sales. That's literally thousands and thousands more hits. Amazing. Even more amazing, the piece in question, which we sourced from the Wall Street Journal, leads with the news that a new virtual pets application known as iFluff Friends (oh do you indeed?) is generating significant revenues for its distributor Social Gaming Network…
