A challenging time is a time of opportunity for telecoms

The migration to next-generation networks is crucial for telecoms operators; those that freeze development are undermining their own future.

What a year! In 2008, we saw the collapse of worldwide financial markets. We saw the real estate market in the U.S. – and now in Russia and other places as well – topple like a house of cards. And unemployment is growing globally; we are seeing too many companies lay off thousands of their employees. Despite the renewed hopes for optimism ("Yes, we can!"), 2009 brought the bankruptcy of one of the telecoms industry's vendor dinosaurs and cautious reactions from pundits. Is this a full-fledged recession? Are we in for grim times ahead? As I look in my backyard in the U.S., it's hard not to feel the gloom around me. However, when looking forward to 2009, I have to remind myself that things may not be as bad as they seem…
