Vinaphone said it has signed a strategic cooperation with Vodafone Group in order to promote its international and enterprise businesses.

In a statement on its web site, the Vietnam-based mobile operator indicated that the partnership is linked to Vodafone’s existing relationship with Conexus Mobile Alliance, which is an alliance of Asia’s leading mobile network operators including Vinaphone.

Vodafone confirmed the partnership in an emailed statement, noting that the Partner Market agreement in Vietnam in fact commenced in December 2013 and falls under the broader Conexus agreement, which the company announced in September 2011.

The move certainly fits in with Vodafone's Partner Markets strategy of forming strategic alliances with local mobile network operators that Vodafone does not own. Partner Market agreements vary from full Vodafone branding arrangements under licence through to product branding, roaming and service resale agreements. Vodafone has operated the Partner Markets strategy for around 12 years.

Vinaphone said it is the only operator in Vietnam to have a strategic cooperation with Vodafone, and expects the relationship to improve the position of both parties in the market.

“Besides, the cooperation with Vodafone will also help Vinaphone brand name be more well-known in other markets in the world,” commented Doan Xuan Hop, a spokesman for Vinaphone.

Vodafone CEO Vittorio Colao was also quoted in the Vinaphone statement as saying that the cooperation will help drive services in the area of corporate customers, roaming, value-added services and more.

“Vodafone can bring international products and services to Vietnam as well as unique services for demand of each market as we have done in all over the world,” Colao added.

Vinaphone is a subsidiary of state-run Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications (VNPT). According to TeleGeography, it is the country’s third-largest mobile operator with a total of 19.95 million subscribers at 30 June 2014. There were 134 million mobile subscribers in Vietnam at the end of last year.
