America Movil has contracted Alcatel-Lucent to provide LTE network equipment for its operations in the Dominican Republic.
The equipment vendor announced on Wednesday that it is supplying Claro, the Mexican telco's local unit, with an LTE network overlay solution.
The first stage of the project, which covers the Dominican Republic's major cities, is already operational, Alcatel-Lucent said. Ultimately, the network will cover most of the country's landmass, serving 80% of the population.
"With the deployment of our new 4G LTE network, we are definitely ready to make an evolution in the services we offer our customers," said Omar Acosta, marketing director at Claro Dominican Republic, in a statement.
"Dominicans can now enjoy multiple benefits of the highest mobile broadband speed, in the largest and strongest network of our country," he added.
America Movil contracted Alcatel-Lucent to supply LTE equipment to Claro Puerto Rico in 2012. Earlier this year the vendor announced it had brokered an LTE overlay network deal with Claro Uruguay.
