Dish Network's high-profile chairman is not just playing games when it comes to gaining his company a foothold in the U.S. mobile market.

As an ex-professional poker player, Charlie Ergen has doubtless built up a particular skill set that will stand him in good stead as the latest round of M&A-related wrangling gets underway in the U.S. mobile market. It is his influence that industry-watchers see driving the unsolicited $3.30-per-share offer Dish Network tabled for Clearwire this week. But, despite having emerged as the highest bidder for the U.S. mobile broadband provider, does Dish really expect to be able to pull off a takeover or are its real intentions hidden behind the poker face of its co-founder and chairman?
