Friday Review: Sticking your oar in

Creating a good customer experience is a balancing act for telecoms operators.

"Mate, you've put the oars in the wrong way round," British Olympic rower James Cracknell informed television presenter Ben Fogle as the pair set off on a 3,000-mile race to row across the Atlantic in 2005. Despite a potentially life-threatening capsize and the fact – as clearly demonstrated above – that Fogle was a complete amateur, their two-man boat was the first of its kind across the line in Antigua after almost 50 days at sea, Fogle explained to guests at the annual World Communication Awards gala dinner in London on Tuesday night. The 2012 awards were presented to winners in 18 categories, including Orange Business Services retaking the Best Global Operator crown, Afghanistan's Roshan picking up Best Customer Care, and culminating in Vodafone's Vittorio Colao being named CEO of the Year.
