<b>Focus on telecoms finance:</b> Venture capital: Nothing ventured

Venture capital firms are conspicuous by their absence, but others are filling the gaps.

INVESTMENT IN telecoms-related start-ups by venture capital companies has fallen off a cliff, but there is a silver lining: operators and new businesses with experience of technology start-ups look set to fill some of the gap. The bad news: technologies such as WiMAX and optical networking could suffer in the funding downturn. In the US, venture capital firms invested less in telecoms networking companies during the first quarter of this year than in any other quarter since 1996, according to the quarterly MoneyTree Report from the National Venture Capital Association and PricewaterhouseCoopers…
